Rwanda’s largest lake, Lake Kivu is set in a wide valley surrounded by the majestic Virunga mountains. Known as one of the great lakes of East Africa, with delightful attractions that make it well worth visiting, this biodiverse area of deep glistening waters is located on the boundary between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. When visiting Rwanda, Lake Kivu offers a picturesque breakaway, with its multiple islands, sandy beaches and small resort towns, while the predator-free parts of the lake are great for water-based activities.

Best time to go to Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu has a tropical climate, with warm temperatures year-round. The first rainy season runs from September to November, with the second one from March and May with the heaviest rains. The dry season runs from June to early September. The best time to visit Lake Kivu is during this dry season as well as in January, when the weather is warm and it is sunny. The temperatures during this time of year are mild and pleasant, making it a great time for outdoor activities such as swimming and boat trips.
