Antananarivo, affectionately known as Tana, is more than just Madagascar’s capital — it’s the pulse of the island. Sprawled over twelve sacred hills in the central highlands, the city is a tapestry of contrasts: red-brick houses and rice paddies set against French colonial landmarks, with narrow staircases and winding roads connecting bustling neighbourhoods. At the heart of the city stands the Rova, the former Queen’s Palace, which overlooks the sprawling urban landscape. Markets such as Analakely and Andravoahangy immerse visitors in the rhythm of local life, with everything from spices and fresh produce to wood carvings and woven crafts on display. The city is also rich in history, with churches, museums, and royal sites offering insights into Madagascar’s unique blend of African and Asian influences. Tana makes a practical and rewarding entry point for any Madagascar itinerary. It’s where most journeys begin and end, thanks to Ivato International Airport, and its location in the central highlands makes it a natural hub for connecting north, south, east, and west. While many travellers only overnight here, spending an extra day or two opens up opportunities to explore nearby attractions, from Ambohimanga, a UNESCO World Heritage royal hill, to the surrounding countryside dotted with rice fields and traditional villages.

Best time to go to Antananarivo (Tana)

The best time to visit Antananarivo is between April and November, when the weather is dry and comfortable for exploring the capital’s bustling streets and surrounding highlands. June to September is particularly pleasant, with cooler temperatures perfect for walking tours, visiting markets, and climbing up to the Queen’s Palace for panoramic city views. These months also align well with dry-season travel across Madagascar, making Antananarivo an ideal entry or exit point in your journey. From December to March, the city experiences heavier rains, which can slow down travel, but the lush greenery of the highlands during this time creates a striking backdrop.

We booked our honeymoon with Viatu. From the first minute on, we had good communication going with our travel agent, and she suggested a very nice itinerary right away. After some little adjustments that were easily done, we were ready to go.
