Do I need a visa to enter Kenya?

Accepted Answer

As of 2024, Kenya does not use a traditional visa system, instead most travellers from outside of Africa (including infants and children) must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation costing $34 per traveller. The application process is very similar to a visa and should be completed online before travelling, allowing at least 2 weeks for completion.

Do I need travel insurance to visit Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Yes. From 6 October 2026, all foreign visitors staying in Kenya for less than 12 months must hold Kenyan government health insurance, whether arriving by air, land or water. Citizens of East African Community countries are exempt.

The cover costs US$44 per person, children included, with small system and gateway charges added at checkout. It can only be bought through official government channels: either as part of your eTA application at etakenya.go.ke, or in advance at insurance.ecitizen.go.ke. The two portals are linked, so a policy bought on one is recognised by the other. Cover bought anywhere else does not meet the requirement.

To prepare, apply for your eTA well before you fly, buy the insurance during or before your application, and keep your proof. No policy document is issued, so save your reference number and a screenshot showing the “Valid” status, and carry a copy of your eTA.

What if I already have travel insurance? Your own policy does not replace the government cover, and the portal does not currently accept documents from other insurers. You will still need to buy the government insurance, but we recommend keeping your existing policy, as it may cover things the government insurance does not.

What if my eTA was issued before 6 October? Travellers with earlier eTAs have so far been reported entering Kenya without difficulty, but official guidance has not yet been issued. We strongly recommend buying the cover through the official portal before you travel.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) in Nairobi is the main entry point for international travellers, with direct flights available from a number of global cities. These include destinations such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, New York, Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, and Johannesburg, among others. This makes it convenient to reach Kenya from Europe, the Middle East, North America, and other parts of Africa. Once in Nairobi, you can easily travel to your safari location via domestic flights or by road.

Most safari lodges and camps provide electricity, either full-time or during set hours. WiFi is often available but may be limited or slower in remote areas. It’s a good idea to check with your lodge or travel expert beforehand if connectivity is a priority.
