The Zanzibar East Coast is home to some of the island’s most spectacular beaches, where powder-white sand stretches for miles along the Eastern Zanzibar beaches. Villages like Paje, Jambiani, Bwejuu, Dongwe, and the Michamvi Peninsula give the area its character, blending traditional fishing life with boutique lodges and lively beach culture. This coast is shaped by tides, which reveal sandbanks and coral flats at low water, then fill lagoons for perfect swimming at high tide. The steady trade winds make Paje one of the world’s best spots for kitesurfing and windsurfing, while offshore reefs invite travellers to explore through snorkelling and diving. Encounters with sea turtles are common, and in some months, there’s even the chance to see whale sharks further out at sea. Each village along the Eastern Zanzibar beaches offers something distinct: Paje is vibrant and youthful, Jambiani is laid-back with cultural flavour, Bwejuu is tranquil and intimate, and the Michamvi Peninsula is famous for its sunsets over Chwaka Bay. Best time to go to Zanzibar East
The best time to visit the Zanzibar East Coast is during the dry seasons from June to October and December to February, when sunny skies and steady winds make conditions ideal for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and snorkelling. The lagoons are at their clearest for swimming, and offshore reefs offer excellent visibility for diving. Between October and March, lucky travellers may also spot whale sharks along the coast. The wet months of April and May, as well as November, bring heavier rains but also fewer visitors, making it a quieter time for those seeking seclusion on the Eastern Zanzibar beaches.
