The Waterberg region in the northeast of South Africa is an area that is rich in biodiversity and includes as many as 5.500 species of plants, almost half of which are endemic to the country, within the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere Reserve. Centred around the imposing Waterberg Mountain in the Limpopo Province, the region is home to at least 11 threatened bird species and 18 threatened mammal species, and is well known for the conservation of elephants, white rhinos, buffalos and leopards. The beautiful rock paintings at Lapalala are evidence of the habitation by ancient people in the area as far back as 3 million years ago.
