Known for its enormous ancient baobabs – including the famous ‘tree of life’ – and large density of elephants, Tarangire National Park is a hidden gem located in the northern part of Tanzania. This seasonal park is cut through by the Tarangire River, which in the dry season draws a tremendous amount of wildlife. A lesser-known safari destination, the park is also where one can see a huge migration of various wildlife — like elephants, zebra and buffalo — without the enormous crowds of visitors that can come with it, not to mention around 500 bird species. The Silale Swamps is another animal hotspot, where visitors can view marsh lions, wild dogs and a variety of other flora and fauna.

Best time to go to
The dry season, which runs from June to October, is when game viewing is often at its best as animals flock to the few remaining water sources. During this time, it can get a bit chilly in the morning and evening, so make sure to pack accordingly. The rains start in November and last until roughly May. This season sees the landscape transform into a green oasis populated by plenty of birds and baby animals.
