At a vast 30.893 km sq, Nyerere National Park is an expansive and pristine national park that was formerly known as Selous Game Reserve and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tanzania. A place full of abundant wildlife, Nyerere boasts many ‘Big Game’ – including the Big 5, giraffes, hippos and plenty of plains game. The park is also a sanctuary for endangered African wild dogs and a plethora of flora and fauna. With a range of breathtaking plains, savannah forests and the mighty Rufiji River – which traverses across riverine marshes and lakes – there are plenty of ways to explore the park and a chance for a village visit to the Maasai.

Best time to go to
During the dry season – from June to October – vegetation becomes sparser and wildlife congregates around water sources, making this time of year fantastic for wildlife viewing. Mid-October is also the peak time to catch the wildebeest migration. However, the park does boast year-round game viewing, including during the green season after the heavy rains have subsided. The heaviest rains occur in April and May, with another shorter rainy season in November and December. January and February are perfect months to experience the green season in the park along with abundant birdlife, plenty of baby animals and predator activity.
