The region forms part of the Northern Tanzania safari circuit, making it an essential stop alongside the Serengeti and Lake Manyara. The most famous attraction is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, where travellers enjoy unforgettable crater safaris. The floor of the crater is home to the Big 5, large herds of plains game, and a high density of predators in Ngorongoro, including lions and hyenas. Between December and March, the area also connects to the wildebeest migration as herds spread into the Ndutu plains. Best time to go to Ngorongoro Region
The best time to travel is during the dry seasons from June to October and December to March, when wildlife viewing is at its peak and roads are easier to navigate. The long dry season (June–October) offers excellent crater safaris with clear skies and concentrated game around water sources. From December to March, the nearby Ndutu plains host the wildebeest calving season, drawing predators and creating some of the most dramatic sightings in northern Tanzania. April and May bring heavy rains, making travel more challenging, but the landscapes turn lush and green with fewer visitors.
