Mount Meru is a striking Tanzania mountain that rises to a height of 4,566 metres (14,980 ft) on the edge of Arusha. Sitting within Arusha National Park, the mountain dominates the landscape with its dramatic Mount Meru crater, forested slopes, and sweeping ridges. It is often seen as the backdrop to a safari in northern Tanzania, and on clear days, it provides some of the most iconic scenic views of Kilimanjaro. The lower slopes of Mount Meru are rich in wildlife, with giraffes, buffalo, elephants, and monkeys roaming the forests and grasslands. Birdlife is equally diverse, making the area an excellent stop for travellers who enjoy combining safari and Mount Meru experiences. Game drives in Arusha National Park reveal the varied habitats surrounding the mountain, from wooded savannah to lush montane forest. The region is easy to reach, with short transfers from Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). For many visitors, it is an accessible way to begin or end a journey that also includes the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Best time to go to Mount Meru
The best time to visit Mount Meru and the surrounding Arusha National Park is during the dry seasons from June to October and December to February. These months bring clearer skies, which means better chances of seeing the mountain itself and the stunning scenic views of Kilimanjaro from its slopes. Wildlife is also easier to spot at this time, as animals gather around water sources and vegetation is less dense, making game drives more rewarding. The green seasons from March to May and again in November transform the area into a lush, bird-rich landscape. While clouds may obscure the mountain more often, the rains bring vibrant colours, fewer vehicles, and excellent opportunities for birdwatching. This period also appeals to photographers who want to capture the contrast of misty forests, waterfalls, and the dramatic Mount Meru crater.
