Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and one of the 7 highest mountains in the world, rising to a height of 5,895 metres (19,341 ft). Located in northern Tanzania, the peak is situated near the Great Rift Valley and on the border with Kenya, where it dominates the views from Amboseli National Park. This dormant volcano is composed of three distinct volcanic cones on Kilimanjaro: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Its summit is crowned with glaciers and the rare spectacle of snow in Africa, making it one of the most iconic sights in East Africa. The mountain lies within Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects the unique flora and fauna of Kilimanjaro, including elephants, buffalo, monkeys, and an extraordinary variety of birdlife. For adventurers, a Mount Kilimanjaro hike is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Several routes lead to the summit, each offering different scenery and challenges. Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro is non-technical but requires preparation, making it one of the most accessible climbs among the world’s tallest peaks. Many travellers combine a Safari and Kilimanjaro itinerary, linking the mountain with nearby Serengeti or Ngorongoro. Access is simple via Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), with connections to Arusha and major parks.

Best time to go to Mount Kilimanjaro
The best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons of January to March and June to October, when skies are clearer and trails are more stable. The rainy months of April and May, as well as November, bring slippery conditions but fewer climbers and lush scenery. Wildlife viewing in the surrounding parks also peaks in the dry season, making these months ideal for combining a mountain hike with a Tanzania safari.
