Mafia Island, Tanzania, is a hidden jewel of the Indian Ocean, part of the Mafia Island Archipelago off the coast of East Africa. Mafia Island lies south of Zanzibar and is reached by short flights to Mafia Island from Dar es Salaam. Less visited than Zanzibar, it offers a quieter, more authentic island experience, complete with pristine white sand beaches, mangroves, and a rich cultural heritage. The island’s main attraction is the Mafia Island Marine Park, one of the best diving destinations in East Africa. Here, travellers can explore coral reefs, colourful fish, and thriving marine life through snorkelling and scuba diving. Between October and March, the highlight is swimming with the whale sharks of Mafia Island, the gentle giants that feed in the waters surrounding the island. Chole Bay, Mafia Island, provides sheltered waters ideal for diving, while turtles nest on surrounding beaches, and dolphins are often seen offshore. Beyond the water, Mafia’s beach lodges and eco-camps provide intimate stays, with access to mangrove walks and cultural excursions. Best time to go to Mafia Island
The best time to visit Mafia Island depends on interest: for whale shark season, plan between October and March, when sightings peak. For diving and snorkelling, conditions are best from October to February and again from June to September, with excellent visibility on the reefs. The rainy months of April and May bring rough seas and limited access, making this the least favourable period.
