At the foot of Mount Kenya, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a pioneering reserve that has become a symbol of conservation success. Once a cattle ranch, it is now best known for its leading role in rhino conservation, protecting one of East Africa’s largest populations of black and white rhinos. Beyond rhinos, the conservancy is home to the Big Five, along with an impressive diversity of wildlife, including elephants, lions, reticulated giraffes, and over 400 bird species. Best time to go to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
The best time to visit Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is during the dry seasons, from June to October and January to March. These months offer the clearest wildlife viewing, with animals congregating near water sources and open plains making sightings of the Big Five easier. It’s also ideal for outdoor activities such as walking safaris and horseback adventures. November and December bring short rains, transforming the landscape into lush green pastures and attracting migratory birds — a rewarding time for photographers and bird lovers. April and May are the long rains, when heavy downpours make travel trickier and some camps close, though the scenery is strikingly beautiful. For families, the dry months align with school holidays, while couples seeking a more private escape may prefer the quieter green season. June also coincides with the world-famous Lewa Marathon, a unique event that blends sport, wildlife, and conservation.
