Once a German colonial port, its historical railway station and the storied MV Liemba ferry—Africa’s oldest operating vessel—stand as reminders of a bygone era. From here, a short boat ride takes you to Gombe Stream National Park, where chimp trekking from Kigoma offers an unforgettable chance to observe our closest relatives in their forested home. Best time to go to Kigoma
The best time to visit Kigoma and its surrounding parks is during the dry season from June to October, when weather conditions are clear and ideal for chimp trekking from Kigoma and lake-based excursions. During this period, wildlife is easier to spot in Gombe Stream National Park and the Mahale Mountains, while the waters of Lake Tanganyika are calm for boat trips and ferry journeys on the MV Liemba. The green season, from November to April, brings lush landscapes and fewer visitors, offering a more peaceful travel experience and excellent opportunities for photography and cultural exploration.
