Isalo National Park is one of Madagascar’s most spectacular natural playgrounds, combining rugged sandstone massifs with lush, hidden oases. Covering more than 800 square kilometres in the island’s southwest, the park is a treasure trove for hikers and photographers alike. The park is also rich in culture — many cliffs and caves are sacred to the Bara people, who have used them for traditional burials for generations. Isalo is often included in overland journeys along Madagascar’s famous RN7 route, linking Antananarivo with Tulear. Best time to go to Isalo National Park
The best time to visit Isalo National Park is during the dry season from April to October, when trails are at their most accessible and daytime temperatures are pleasant for hiking. June to September is especially good, with cooler air and clear skies that make trekking through the sandstone canyons even more enjoyable. During this time, the park’s waterfalls and natural pools provide refreshing stops along the way. November to March brings heavier rains and hotter conditions, but the park becomes beautifully green and less crowded. For most travellers, the dry months offer the best combination of scenery, weather, and accessibility.
