Tucked along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, Gombe Stream National Park is one of Africa’s smallest yet most storied wildlife sanctuaries. Famous as the Jane Goodall research site, it remains one of the best places on earth for chimpanzee trekking in Tanzania. Within its steep forested valleys — like Mitumba and Kasekela, home to the region’s most studied chimp community — travellers can watch our closest relatives up close, observing their play, foraging, and complex social bonds in their natural habitat. Beyond chimpanzees, the park teems with other primates: red colobus, red-tailed, and blue monkeys swing through the canopy, while olive baboons patrol the forest floor. The park’s mosaic of rainforest and rivers gives way to sandy beaches along the Lake Tanganyika shoreline, where evenings are spent cooling off after guided forest hikes and waterfall trails to spots like the scenic Kakombe Waterfall. Birdwatching in western Tanzania adds another layer of wonder, with over 200 recorded species. Access is typically by lakeside boat transfer from Kigoma, adding to the sense of adventure. With its mix of chimpanzee habituation experiences, primate research tourism, and off-the-beaten-path safaris, Gombe offers an intimate encounter with wild nature and a rare chance to witness conservation and science in action.

Best time to go to Gombe Stream National Park
The best time to visit is from June to October, when trails are dry and visibility is high for chimpanzee trekking and forest hikes. During this dry season, chimps stay closer to the valleys, making sightings more consistent. The short rains between November and December bring fresh greenery and excellent birdwatching, while January to February offers calm lake conditions and fewer visitors. The long rains from March to May make trails slippery but add a lush atmosphere for photographers and researchers. Year-round, Gombe remains a rewarding destination for those drawn to off-the-beaten-path safaris and primate research tourism, combining adventure with the quiet magic of rainforest wildlife in Tanzania.
