Majestic mountains, forests, grasslands, and villages, home to the Zulu people

Zululand is a traditional region in the northeastern section of KwaZulu-Natal, extending along the coast and inland into the rural heart of the province. Home to the Zulu people, this is the perfect place to learn more about the intriguing culture, with many museums and villages to visit in addition to tea plantations, cattle farms and charming towns. Adorned with tranquil and verdant hills, grasslands and forests, this area is a beautiful place to appreciate the abundance of wildlife by following self-drive or guided routes in the multiple reserves and parks. With that, the Zululand Birding Route is home to over 650 species of birds and has directed attention to conserving birds and their habitats by encouraging avitourism.

Best time to go to Zululand

Best

Acceptable
Zululand’s hot subtropical climate invites visitors all year round, but the best time for wildlife viewing is the winter dry season, between May and September. From May to December, you can spot migrating whales, and from November to January, sea turtles nest along the northern Zululand coast. Birdwatching is best during the rainy season, from October to March, when the migrant birds visit and the landscape is lush and green. Note that northern Zululand has a malaria risk during the rainy summer season.
